Looking Forward to the Death of SMS

Reading the November 2009 edition of PC Media view point analysis: Mari Menunggu Kematian SMS (Awaiting the Death of SMS) is kind of liberating. I've been waiting so long for that moment. The death of SMS that is.

I was an SMS freak in my younger years...I can type the whole 160, 320, even 480 characters message without having to look at my phone, no error. It's true. No joke here. I am not sure since when...but these recent years, I am so sick of SMS. Friends and family often complaints that I seldom reply their text. I'd rather call than text.

Call me lazy...but I don't enjoy texting, not as I used to. Beside...texting (while driving) can kill you.


With SMS, I feel like we're going back to the age of the "pager". Sometimes, I get a very late response to my SMS (basi deh). SMS is not for quick response conversations, it's for something that need no response or require very little response.


It's ridiculous to text when you can call (there shouldn't be any budget constraint... cellular operators are at war with the cheap tariff, so...nope...no excuse). I think people are becoming more and more practical these days.

Social networking is used very heavily by the mobile web users. This also consequently implies that the operators are likely to see a drop in their revenue from SMS business, which I think will be compensated by an increase in the volume of data usage in the country. This is mainly because it would be more economical to send an email via mobile internet instead of sending an SMS.

With the euphoria and rave over Blackberry and iPhone with Social Networking like Facebook, Twitter, Hi5, YM, etc... I don't think it will be long till we see the death of SMS. I know I HAVE been expecting that day to come.

Here are a bunch of people I should apologize to for posting and whining about them in here.

1. To all the motor riders that I yelled at when driving to the office in a rush every morning (that's a lot of yelling).
2. To all the pedestrian who crossed the street in an unlikely location, to the particular one I accidentally hit on.

5. To Music Critics for not understood you when you categorized DMB, The Decemberists and Peter Bjorn & John as "alternative".
6. To Ibu Megawati Soekarno Putri (aka TOLWLTW - That Other Lady Who Likes To Whine).
7. To Indosat Matrix and Its Customer Service (for taking my complaints - I still do by the way).
8. To some people I scoffed at in Jason Mraz Show (if you remember there was this lady wearing black top with a fierce eyes and words...that's me!)
9. To all sinetron crews and cast, why do you guys make all that crap I just can't get it - ummm...sorry again.. :p
10. To the drama King/Queen
11. To my colleagues and team mates at the office for putting up with me while I played the music in my playlist...I know it's not a common music (or as some of you referring to as "is it music at all?"). I'm letting you off the hook, now that I wear earphones.
12. To My Hometown (Ternate) for not visiting you for ages.
13. To all manual haters (i still don't get why you don't read manuals though).
14. To the government when they banned YouTube for a moment.
15. To Aa Gym and his wives for acting like I know them. I'm sure I don't. Would never judge 'em.

Wow...that's quite a long list (not to mention in my real life).

However, there are some people that I'd rather not apologize to for posting their story in my blog.

1. Smokers, for endangering other people's lives.
2. Steve Ballmer (aka. Microshaft) for producing Windows Vista and the lousy Internet Explorer.
3. The Ass Kisser, I prefer fair playing.
4. Last but not least......To the device or the person (if you must call him a person) who produced "Fitna".

Should I Ditch Firefox/Flock for Google Chrome?

What browser are you currently using?

Mozilla Firefox and Flock Eco Edition (also from Firefox) are my favorite ones.

I have them both installed on my machine. I force myself to keep the windows default browser (internet explorer), though I really hate it.


I've also tried Opera and though many people seem to think that Opera is cool, I think the other way around as I don't feel comfortable using it.

Welcome Google Chrome

Now we all have to welcome Google Chrome, a new browser produced by Google. Chrome was launched for the first time on September 1. The launched of Chrome was rather unique, by publishing a comic book created by Scott McCloud (you can download it here).

Beta version of Chrome was released on September 2 in over 100 countries. Google claims Chrome to be faster, safer and more stable than its competitors. (read it in Google Official Blog here).

Google Chrome also allows tab browsing like the others. The difference is, the tab was located outside the window, instead of inside the window like others located. Chrome also equipped with Task Manager to manage these tabs.

Speed Test

Lars Bak, the Google engineer who was the technical leader for Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, said at the launch event Tuesday he's confident Chrome is "many times faster" than the rivals at running JavaScript, the programming language that powers Google Docs, Gmail, and many other Web applications.

Google Chrome vs Mozilla Firefox

Google is the default search egine for Mozilla Firefox. From what I find out, the ads from Firefox Search Usage is the largest chunk of Mozilla's income, up to85%. Contract between Google and Mozilla will end in November this year and we can expect Google to appear as the default search engine of Chrome (duh!).

With Google search as the default search engine, can Chrome lure me to leave Firefox and Flock? Let's see.

Charter Will Monitor Customers’ Web Surfing to Target Ads

Charter Communications, the fourth-largest cable system in the United States, has started telling its high-speed Internet customers that it is going to keep track of every site they visit on the Web.

The cable company will sell the data to a firm called NebuAd, which in turn will use it to show ads to Web-surfing Charter customers that are meant to be related to their interests. (Visit a knitting site yesterday and see yarn ads today.)

Charter started sending letters out to several hundred thousand customers in four markets: Fort Worth, Tex.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Oxford, Mass.; and Newtown, Conn. (The letters were first reported by DSLreports.com.)

Charter said it will start testing the system within 30 days and will make a decision whether to introduce it to its 2.8 million Internet customers a few months after that.

Using data from Internet service providers for what the advertising people call behavioral targeting raises all kinds of questions about privacy, disclosure and who owns the information about where Internet users surf.

“All we are doing is, in an anonymous format, providing additional context to serve those ads. To the extent those ads are more meaningful to me as Ted Schremp, I will have a better Internet experience than the generic ads that are part of Yahoo and everything online.”

For those customers who disagree, Mr. Schremp said that Charter was offering the ability for them to choose not to be part of the system. I suggested that most privacy experts prefer opt-in systems where information isn’t collected until the user explicitly grants permission. He said that opt-out has become the norm for all targeting on the Internet.

How much money is NebuAd paying Charter for access to information about its customers’ surfing behavior? Mr. Schremp wouldn’t say. (Robert Dykes, NebuAd’s chief executive, said last month that the company was willing to pay Internet providers several dollars per subscriber a month.)

Mr. Schremp did acknowledge that raising revenue was a main goal for Charter in this: “We want to leverage technology in a way that makes sense for our economic model.”

Fitna, You Tube and 'Premanisme'

I am one of those ordinary people who sometimes (not always) update themselves with the latest news. Usually it takes up to one or two days for me to hear "the hip and happening" news.

Apply also when some Dutch man of no important make an ill provocative yet one-sided documenter film about Islam. I curse the person who made the film. t bothers me that this sicko degrade my belief. But I have my faith, and I am sure you have yours. We all - including many of his fellow Dutchmen - curse the filmmaker. This sicko, I am sure, has earn the impact of his stupid and poor action and will continue to pay in a very long time. Considering, he will have some very unpleasant activity to do, prep himself for the upcoming lawsuits.

You Tube

As commercial as it, You Tube of course gain some perspective (and cash) from a lot of people (by publishing the shitty and crappy documentary on its page). As liberal as I may sound, who can prevent this to occur in this so-called modern world? And as stupid as I may sound, preventing You Tube from posting the piece of shit is not going to make us any smarter either. Preventing You Tube from posting it only increase profitability to the maker. So... I guess we will not be that stupid right?

Premanisme

Premanisme is an Indonesian slank for a hostile attitude toward differences. Premanisme, if not prevented, can lead toward offensiveness. Often, principal difference can lead to 'premanisme', which if we leave it, can lead to violence. If we can grow a culture that can share and appreciate differences (even in worst kind) toward a more constructive manner, than all differences will be actioned in a more civilized way.

The banning of You Tube by the government is neither civilized nor constructive. It is not civilized in a way that the site is run by a capitalist, who wouldn't understand the-ban-first-think-later attitude from our government. It is not constructive in a way that You Tube is the fastest growing video stie that post varieties of them. From education to entertainment, from religion to obscene materials like porn. We gain some useful information from the site, no need to explain more on this, as we all agree I am sure.

No other word can perfectly describe the action than 'premanisme'. They ban just because they can. It is not You Tube that was banned. It is us, Indonesian. The main background of that action is simply a trust issue. The government do not trust its own people. Period. You Tube has no business in obeying the voice of from the third world nation (yeah, that's what they call us). They don't care. Oh.. what was that expression they use to ignore a person? Bite me! Or in this case, BAN ME!
